We hope that you all enjoyed the long weekend. It is hard to believe that we are approaching the final stretch of the 1st quarter. We still have many events to look forward to including the Book Fair, Student Council Elections, MATSURI Awards and Parent Teacher Conferences! Please read the parent bulletin for additional details and as always, reach out via email with any questions!

September is National Attendance Month:
Every minute counts when students are at school. This year we are working on improving attendance for all our students. Let’s help all our Momongas build a habit of good attendance early to set them up for success as they move into middle school and high school. Review our Attendance Pro Tips provided:
- Make sure students come to school well rested with a good night’s sleep.
- Allow plenty of time to get ready, get out the door, and transition to school.
- Have clothes and shoes ready and homework in the backpack the night before.
- Call the school for each day of illness or injury.
- Bring doctor notes to the school office the day after an appointment.
- Respond to school messages about your student’s attendance.
- Talk with the teacher and principal if your student has concerns about attending school.

Friar Friday & 7th Inning Stretch Treats for Teachers
We love Spirit Days here at Muraoka! Don’t forget to wear your Padre Gear (or other baseball team) on Friday, September 9th! We will also be honoring our teachers and staff with 7th Inning Stretch Treats in the Lounge on this day. Please feel free to sign up to donate HERE.
We are looking for coaches to provide 4th-6th Muraoka students the opportunity to participate in CVESD co-ed volleyball or flag football league. The leagues for these sports run October – December. If you are interested in being a volunteer coach, please contact Mrs. Rayray by September 9. If we can secure coaches, then notification about trying out will be sent out to families in grades 4th-6th.
While we are still in need of one more School Site Council Representative, we do have two candidates for the 3 positions available. Please be sure to click on this link to vote for TWO candidates.
Parent Teacher conferences
Parent teacher conferences and minimum days will begin on Thursday, September 15th – Thursday, September 22nd . This is a wonderful time to connect with the classroom teacher, learn more about your child’s progress and create goals for the school year. Teachers will be scheduling conferences with all parents/guardians (no students please). If you have not received a notification to sign up for a conference time, please reach out to your classroom teacher to sign up. Virtual option is available by parent/guardian request.
Social Emotional Learning Focus
If you attended our SEL Parent Chat sponsored by ELAC, you know that Social Emotional learning is an important focus of ours at Muraoka. We know that when we have clear expectations for students and a common language across all grade levels that students thrive! Here is a little bit about what we have been learning and the expectations at Muraoka:
The Momonga 4 are our 4 pillars or our 4 expectations. They are: Be safe, Be respectful, Be responsible and Be kind. Teachers and staff have gone into detail about what these expectations look like in different parts of the school. Each week, at our Momonga Monday Blacktop Assembly, we choose a different area to of focus. For example, we recently focused on lunch arbor expectations. We know that when students are aware of the expectations it is easier for them to meet them! We love recognizing our Momongas for meeting expectations (pink slips/golden tickets).
Zones of Regulation:
We use the first quarter of school to build emotional self-understanding and develop self-awareness in our Momongas through the Zones of Regulation program. Students are taught to identify what zone they are in and explore tools they can use to get them into the preferred zone for learning. Zones of regulation lessons are taught in the first quarter and reinforced throughout the year.
Muraoka uses the Positivity Project as our character program to empower students and to build positive relationships and be their best selves. Some of the strengths include humility, bravery, self-control, and perseverance. This week: Cheering Other’s Successes.
Traffic and Safety:
We recently met with CVESD’s Emergency Preparedness and Security Manager regarding the traffic concerns surrounding Muraoka. We are working on putting a plan in place that includes School Resource Officer presence on campus, Student Safety Patrol and Traffic Parent volunteers. Please reach out to Mrs. Mazeau or Mrs. Rayray if you can volunteer before or after school 1-5 days a week.
Here are the most critical reminders for this week:
- Red Curbs – “as required under California Vehicle Code Section 21458(a)(1), a curb painted red shall indicate no stopping, standing, or parking whether the vehicle is attended or unattended.”
- Yellow curbs are for loading and unloading only – cars should not be parked and left unattended. If you are on a yellow curb, you should be in your vehicle.
- Use crosswalks for crossing the street and parking lot.
- When dropping students off, please be sure that they exit the vehicle on the right so that they get out directly onto the sidewalk closest to the school building.
- Follow traffic patterns and do not double park along parking spaces
