Read Across America Week: Creating and Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers!

As many of you know, we opened our Muraoka Library last week and students will be checking out books to borrow at their scheduled time. This is entirely new to Muraoka, and we are so grateful for our PTO, our library technician, Mrs. Haas, and our amazing staff for supporting these efforts. Our school library will continue to be a focus and we will continue to add titles each year! We are excited to build on this commitment to literacy with our Read Across America Week. Please reach out to your classroom teacher if you would like to be a guest reader this week! Please see the attached schedule for our Spirit Week!

Parent Teacher Conferences March 9-March 16:

Our Spring Parent-Teacher conferences begin on Thursday, March 9th and end on Thursday, March 16th. All students will have minimum days during parent teacher conferences with dismissal at 1pm for kindergarten and 1:15 for 1st-6th. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss your child’s progress. Every family is expected to participate in a conference so please reach out to your classroom teacher if you have yet to schedule a conference time.

Cell Phones and Phone Watches:

We have seen an increase in students using personal cell phone and phone/watches on campus. For your student to bring a cell phone onto campus, they must have a cell phone policy contract signed and on file (contract was included in the beginning of the year forms). The cell phone contract indicates that all cell phones must be turned off and put away from the moment your student arrives on campus until they depart. Cell phones will be held in the office or with classroom teacher until a parent is able to pick up if the cell phone contract is violated. If your child is wearing a watch that can act as a phone, those features must be disabled while on campus. Thank you for your support.

Breakfast served daily from 7:35am -8:05am:

This is a friendly reminder that free breakfast for Muraoka Students is served from 7:35 am-8:05 am as stated in our parent handbook. Please arrive prior to 8:05 if your student plans to eat breakfast. This will allow students sufficient time to eat and arrive to class on time.

Submit Yearbook Photos:

The yearbook needs your help! Do you have pictures of your students at school events or on Spirit Days? If so, please create an account at ybkpix.com and submit your photos directly to the Yearbook Committee. Please see the How-To Sheet for any additional questions.

CVESD ThoughtExchange Survey is Now Open!

It is not too late to participate! This is your opportunity to share what is going well or what you believe could improve your student’s educational experience. We would love to see all our families participate. If you do not feel like sharing your thoughts, you can log in to read the thoughts of others and rate them as important to you or not that important to you.

Our annual ThoughtExchange for community input on the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) is now open! Please see the flyer (in English and Spanish) for more information. This year, we are asking the question: What are some things we are doing well, and what could improve the educational experience we provide students through the LCAP?

The LCAP shapes our District’s goals and guides our budgeting priorities at both the district and school levels. Please join in on the conversation from Feb. 1 through April 1, 2023.

Message from our Library Tech, Mrs. Heather Haas:

We are excited to announce that our Momongas will now be able to use the Accelerated Reader (AR) program!

AR is a computer-based program that helps teachers track students’ independent practice and progress with reading. Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at their own pace. Once finished, your child will be able to take a Reading Practice Quiz at school, on the computer. Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.

We encourage you and your students to go to www.arbookfind.com when choosing books from your home or the public library to see if they have AR quizzes available. You can search for titles, authors, or books that meet specific criteria, such as books in Spanish. No login is required.

Reach our to our Library Tech, Mrs. Haas (heather.haas@cvesd.org), if you have any questions.

Happy reading, Momongas!

YMCA Annual Campaign:

Please consider donating to the YMCA’s annual campaign! Every gift makes an incredible difference! Please feel free to share with any of your friends or family as well. Our goal is $2,000.00 and our fundraiser ends March 14. Thank you for not only supporting our efforts to raise funds for the Y, but also giving back to your community! We appreciate you!

We hope that you have found these procedures to ease some of the congestion we experience at pick up. Just a reminder that school starts at 8:15am each morning and students can arrive on campus at 7:35 for breakfast only.  All students on campus prior to 7:55 must be eating breakfast in the lunch arbor.

SSC Meeting: Please join us this Thursday, January 19th @ 3:00pm for our School Site Council Meeting. We will be reviewing midyear data from our most recent school wide diagnostic exams.

This is Us will be the theme for our yearbook cover as we continue to identify our differences and learning to viewing these differences as strengths. New Dismissal Procedures

Muraoka Families,

Prior to our Winter Break, we mentioned in our Weekly Bulletin that there would be some modifications to our dismissal procedures to help ease foot traffic in front of the school. We are re-sending those procedures with some minor edits. Thank you for all that you do on a daily basis to keep our large population of students safe! We appreciate you!

Mrs. Mazeau and Mrs. Rayray

New Dismissal Procedures for 2023:

We are aware of the congestion our families experience during our daily dismissal. Beginning on January 10, 2023, you will experience some changes to 1st-6th grade dismissal procedures in hopes of mitigating some of the foot traffic in the front of the school. Please note that NO changes will be made to kindergarten dismissal. Kindergarten dismissal will remain the same as kindergarten requires a hand-to-hand release.  Here are some changes you will see on January 10, 2023, for students in grades 1st-6th:

  1. Gates will open after kindergarten dismissal but prior to 1st-6th grade dismissal. This will allow our families to walk onto campus to meet their student in a predesignated area selected by you (i.e., outside of building, benches, wall ball courts, play structure, side gate, front of school, car loop etc.)
  2. At 2:45, teachers in grades 1st-6th will dismiss students from the building but will NOT be walking students to the gate.
  3. Students are responsible for walking themselves to their designated pick-up area. For some, it may be straight to the car loop, for others, it may be the tree in front of the main gate. Parents may also wait near the building that their child will be released from but please note that there will not be any hand-to-hand release as this is only required for kindergarten students.
  4. There will be no changes for students who get picked up by car. Students who get picked up by car will proceed straight to the car loop after dismissal from their building.
  5. There will be no changes for students who walk home. Students who walk home will proceed directly off campus after dismissal from their building.
  6. ALL students and families are expected to proceed off campus as soon as pick up takes place. Unfortunately, there will not be any opportunities for students or families to linger on campus, no opportunities to stay and play on the playground, play structure, wall bar court etc.
  7. An announcement will be made at 3 pm directing all students remaining on campus to the front office. Identification is required when picking up front the front office.
  8. Please note that bicycles, scooters, skateboards, or pets cannot be brought onto campus at any time.
  9. ALL PETS must remain on the perimeter of Santa Alexia, Santa Diana, and Santa Victoria. Thank you for your cooperation as this is the pet protocol followed by all CVESD schools.

Thank you in advance for your daily support and compliance. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Mrs. Mazeau and Mrs. Rayray

We are expecting rain on Monday! In the event that it is actively raining, the Momonga Monday Assembly will be postponed to Friday, December 16th and we will default to our rainy day procedures. Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather and below you will find some additional reminders:

Arrival:

  1. North Gate (Santa Diana) will open at 7:35 for Breakfast Only. Please do not drop off your child prior to 7:35am. Students will eat in the Multi Purpose room. Unfortunately, there is very limited space and we are unable to accommodate parents in the MPR on rainy days.
  2. Front gates for students who are NOT eating breakfast will open at 8am.
  3. At 8 am, K-2 Students will report to the Innovation Center to wait for their classroom teacher. Thank you for dropping off at the double glass sliding doors as we are unable to accommodate parents in the Innovation Center.
  4. At 8am, 3-6th grade students will report directly to their classrooms.

If it is actively raining at dismissal:

  1. Kindergarten students are dismissed from the Innovation Center where they were dropped off
  2. 1st grade students are dismissed from the Multipurpose Room
  3. 2nd-6th grade students are dismissed from the front gates as usual.

New Report Cards for Quarter 2

This quarter CVESD has created a new Progress Report (report card) for reporting grades. There will be a revised rubrics utilized by teachers to identify your child’s progress towards the grade-level standards throughout the year. To assist with helping families understand the changes to the reporting process, we will be sending home resources and a parent guide to accompany the updates with the report card. We hope you find the updates beneficial to understanding your child’s academic progress throughout the year. You may reach out to your child’s teacher if you have further questions. Report cards will be sent home by the end of the quarter on Friday, December 16, 2022.

New Pick Up Procedures for 2023:

We are aware of the standing congestion our families experience in the front of the school during our daily dismissal. Beginning in January 2023, we will be making some changes to 1st-6th grade dismissal procedures that we hope will improve this congestion. Please note that NO changes will be made to Kindergarten dismissal. Kindergarten dismissal will remain the same.  Here are some changes you will see in January 2023:

  1. Teachers in grades 1st-6th will dismiss students from the building but will not be walking students to the gate.
  2. Gates will open prior to dismissal to allow families on campus to meet their student in a predesignated area selected by you (i.e. lunch tables, wall ball courts, play structure, side gate, front of school etc).
  3.  There will be no changes for students who get picked up by car. Students will proceed to the car loop.
  4. There will be no changes for students who walk home. Students will proceed off campus and home immediately.
  5. All students and families are expected to proceed off campus as soon as pick up takes place. Unfortunately, there will not be any opportunities for students to stay and play on the playground, play structure, wall bar court etc.
  6. Students not picked up will be sent to the front office at 3pm.

We are still refining these procedures, please expect reminders before we return on January 10th, 2023.

Weekly Bulletin 11/28/22

Muraoka Families,

We hope that this weeklong break was enjoyed by all our Muraoka Families. We are incredibly grateful for our Momongas who come to school every day, ready to learn! We are also grateful for our Muraoka Families who continually support our students, school, and staff.  We are entering the home stretch of our second quarter and our last 3 weeks are filled with assessments, spirit days and our quarterly awards. Please read our bulletin for additional details.

With Gratitude,

Mrs. Mazeau and Mrs. Rayray

Mid-Year Assessments:

The assessment window for Achieve 3000 and iReady will be 11/28-12/16. Please note that teachers and grade levels are selecting dates within this window to administer the mid-year assessments. Please watch for notice from your classroom teacher for the specific dates of your child’s assessment.

Testing Tips:

  • Get enough sleep— 8-10 Hours of sleep per night helps children have the energy to do their best!
  • Eat a healthy breakfast— Start the day with a meal that includes healthy energy-boosting foods such as eggs, cereal, or whole-wheat toast!
  • Exercise— Physical activity helps improve attention!
  • Think positive thoughts— You can encourage your child to take slow deep breaths and think of something that makes them happy when they feel stressed during a test.
