Parent Bulletin ~ June 2022

HAPPY SUMMER

Thank you so much for a wonderful school year! It has been a year like no other, but our Momongas persevered and finished strong! It has been great to be able to welcome families back on campus the past several weeks for joyous events. We had our Book Fair, Family Picnic, Masonic Awards, Matsuri Awards, Gold Rush Day for 4th grade, Water Play Day for 1st grade, Kinder Promotion, and 6th Grade Promotion.  The energy and excitement were awesome.  Our last day of school included a Good Bye Tunnel for our 6th graders, dance and karaoke parties at recess, and fun photo ops! It was a wonderful way to the end the year!

On Friday, all students brought home their report card.  In addition, they brought home a Student Summary document that includes Local Measures assessment data.  Please use the link below to access an explanation of the data included:

2022 CVESD Local Measure Home Letter

The office staff will be working through June 15th.  Please feel free to stop by if you have items to pick up or paperwork to drop off.   The last day to drop off or pick up any items will be June 15th.

We wish you and our Momongas a wonderful summer! As a reminder, students are able to access all technology programs they have been using this year, during the summer.  Achieve 3000, Smarty Ants and iReady are great tools for skill practice! We encourage our Momongas to read, read, read over the summer too! Please check out our Chula Vista Public library for exciting summer reading opportunities!

Our 2022-2023 school year will begin on Wednesday, July 20th.  July 20th will be a minimum day for all students. Remember, please check or follow the blog (https://muraokaelementary.edublogs.org/)  for any updates about the new school year!

Parent Bulletin ~ 5-30-22 to 6-3-22

Memorial Day Holiday – 5-30-22

On Monday, May 30th our school will be closed in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.  Students will return to school on Tuesday, May 31st for a full day of learning. Our last week of the school year will be a four day week! Summer is so close! As we end the school year, please know we have two promotion events this week.  Parking will be limited and traffic will be increased on both June 1st and 2nd due to these events.  We encourage families to walk to school on both these days. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this request!

Student Safety and Support

We are all deeply saddened by last week’s senseless tragedy in Uvalde, Texas. At Saburo Muraoka Elementary, we must work together to keep our school community safe.  A starting point is, if you see or hear something, say something.  Discuss with your children that we do not make jokes about harming others. Please remind your children that if they see or hear any threats or concerning things, they should speak up immediately. We ask that families also speak up if they notice any safety concerns so we can address them promptly.  We encourage families to have age-appropriate conversations with your children about what happened in Texas last Tuesday.  Our school counselor and school psychologist, are available to provide support for students on campus, but we know that parents and guardians are a vital part of a child’s education that extends outside of school hours.

We would like to share two resources with you to support these conversations.  The San Diego County Office of Education created a resource for parents and educators to discuss school shootings:  https://www.sdcoe.net/about-sdcoe/news/post/~board/news/post/resources-to-discuss-school-shootings

Another great resource is Sandy Hook Promise:  https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/

Children and educators should be able to go to school free from violence. As we move forward together, we call on our school community to remember that every action begins with each one of us. We urge each of you to take good care of yourselves and your families and to find ways to connect with one another through compassion. Please know that our school can provide resources to any families who feel they need support.

Together, we can provide the safety and care needed for our children.  We pledge to partner with families to ensure student safety and student well being at our school.  We know you have questions about safety and security at our school. Please know our main priorities are always student safety and learning.  We care deeply about each and every student and have procedures and protocols to keep students and staff safe at all times. We develop a Comprehensive School Safety Plan(CSSP) annually. The plan addresses emergencies, outlines emergency command structure, defines roles and responsibilities, provides detailed explanations of emergency procedures and drills, and identifies potential risks to the school and ways to mitigate those risks. Our Chula Vista Police Department partners review this plan annually and offer ways to improve upon the plan.  If you have questions about our Comprehensive School Safety Plan or are interested in reviewing it, please let us know.

LOST & FOUND ITEMS

There is a large amount of clothing, water bottles, and lunch bags that have been lost over the course of the year. This week we will be placing all lost and found items outside of the school near the main office before and after school for you to browse for any of your child’s belongings. Any belongings left after the last day of school will be donated. Please take a moment this week to stop by to look for items, if your child has lost items this year.

HANOVER SURVEY IS HERE!

Image result for parent surveyDon’t forget our Hanover Survey for parents and upper grade students will go live this week on Tuesday, May 31st. The link to the survey will be provided to you via our district communication platform starting Tuesday. Be sure to check your junk and spam folders for the email. Please make every effort to fill out this very important survey. Each year, we analyze the results of the survey.  Your opinions count and we will thoughtfully and purposefully take your ideas to make our school a better place for children. Topics on this important survey include school appearance, finances, technology, instruction, as well as attitudes about safety, transportation, climate and communication. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey!

Congratulations to our 22-23 PTO Board

Residency Verification

Last week you received an email from “Power School” to be able to submit your annual residency requirement. Through this system you will be able to upload your proof of residency documents, complete the residency from and update your contact information by June 3, 2022.  If you do not complete the residency verification process, your child will not be placed on a class list for the new school year. Verification Documents must have a due date after May 20th, 2022.

End of Year Testing Continues

Our end of the year state and local measures assessments will continue this week. Attendance and punctuality are critical during this time. Every day that your child is present and on time for school, they will earn a raffle ticket! Raffle tickets will be drawn each afternoon for a chance to win a popsicle or a trip to the prize box. Best of luck to all our Momongas in the upcoming weeks. We are very proud of the growth we have seen already!

Testing Tips:

  • Arrive on time- Testing will begin promptly at the start of the school day.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast on campus or at home- start the day with a meal that incudes healthy energy boosting foods such as eggs or whole wheat toast!
  • Get a good night’s rest- at least 8-10 hours of sleep will prepare students to do their best!
  • Think positive thoughts-you can encourage your child to take slow deep breaths and think of something that makes them happy if they start to feel stressed during the test.

Change in Masking Requirements – Please Read

On Wednesday, March 9th, the CVESD Board of Education voted to make a change to the requirement of indoor masking for all on school campuses.  Effective March 21st, indoor masking is now encouraged, but not required for both adults and students.  As face masks are now strongly recommended for students and staff, but not required, We want to remind our students and community members the importance of being kind and respectful towards each other, as some students and staff may decide to continue wearing masks and some may not. No student or staff member should be made to feel uncomfortable for their choice of whether or not to wear a mask now that the guidance has changed.
Masks will still be available, should a staff member or student want one, but we will not be asking students if they want to wear a mask.  If your family is choosing to continue masking and your child forgets their mask, please let your child know that they can ask a staff member for one and we will be able to provide it for them.
As always, the safety of our community is of utmost importance and we will continue to monitor federal, state and local guidelines, adjusting when needed. Thank you for your support as we enter this next chapter of the pandemic.

COVID 19 Update

Good Morning Families,

We loved welcoming our Momongas back to school yesterday! They bring us so much joy! Thank you for entrusting us with your wonderful children!

As you know, there has been an increase in positive cases in our county.  We need your help ensuring we are able to reduce the spread.  Please remind your students to wear a mask that fits snuggly around their nose and mouth at all times unless they are actively eating, drinking, or playing/exercising outside.  Also, remind them to wash or sanitize hands frequently and to physically distance from others when possible.  Finally, please be sure to keep your child at home if they have any COVID 19 symptoms.

If your child tested positive for COVID 19 using an at home test kit or at an outside location (county testing site or medical office), please keep your child at home and notify us.  Please refer to the letter below for specific instructions on the notification process.

Positive COVID Test Reporting

Please ensure you also keep your child home if there is a positive case in your household.  Please refer to the COVID 19 Decision Tree for specific isolation and quarantine procedures: San Diego County Office of Education COVID 19 Decision Tree

Thank you for working with us to help ensure our students, staff, and community stay as healthy and safe as possible.

Thank you,

Mrs. Mazeau and Mrs. Rayray
